Ski Bosnia Herzegovina
Bosnia Herzegovina has been home to around 12 ski areas over the years although the exact number currently operational is difficult to accurately ascertain. This is because ski lifts and other items in infrastructure at many were destroyed and in some cases mines were placed on or near the ski slopes when they were part of the battlefield of the Balkan Wars in the 1990s during the break-up of the former Yugoslavia.
However Bosnia Herzegovina is of course famous as the unlikely host in the 1984 of the 14th Winter Olympic Games, when the country’s capital Sarajevo, then a regional city within Yugoslavia, hosted the Games in which British ice skaters Torvill and Dean were supreme.
The city had three ski areas but was devastated by siege from 1992–1995.
Jahorina is the largest with a capacity of 14,000 people on its 14 lifts, including four chairlifts, and 20kmn of runs.
Other Bosnian ski areas include Vlašić Mountain near the ancient town of Travnik in central Bosni, while in western Bosnia Kupres and Blidinje Nature Park are situated in a spectacular wilderness area.
